I'm not familiar with the original, nor any fanfic, for this story, but I found it easy to follow, for the most part. I enjoyed the loving relationship between these two, and the hint of their past story makes me eager to read more.

Oh, you really should go read The Charioteer. It is a wonderful book and the tale of Ralph and Laurie is one of the most engrossing tales out there. And Lorie wrote this wonderfully detailed, fully imagined fanfic of what would happen if Ralph and Laurie moved to America after the war and there is this great murder mystery and Ellery Queen shows up! and everything.

*hangs head* I have The Charioteer sitting in my stack of "to reads" beside my bed. Stack is pretty darn high. I noodled out enough to realize that this is a lovely snippet of their world and homage to Lorie's story as well.

So sad to see their relationship tainted by the fear of discovery. Perhaps in our lifetime we will see legislation in most of the civilized world that allows all of us to love who we love and marry who we wish, period. At that point, I think we will have passed another stage of evolution.
